Isomer Game – Who.. what… why?

Isomer is an alphafunded isometric strategy game inspired by classic XCOM games, Dwarf Fortress and many other survival titles. You play the role of the commander of an invading alien force, sent to a distant planet tasked with setting up a mining colony. You land with a dropship and a compliment of minions who will mine for resources, build fortifications and blast any unwitting humans who venture too close.

The only goals you have (apart from surviving) are the ones you set. How long will you survive? What will you find on each world? How large will you build your base and armies?

Control an alien force hell-bent on conquest

Build up your forces by trading resources for reinforcements with passing resupply ships and mutate your troops into specialist units from scouts to warriors. Units gain experience and evolve over time.

Explore huge procedurally generated worlds

Each world has it’s own distribution of biomes, resources and enemy facilties staffed with angry defenders keen on evicting you from their planet!

It’s open ended, sandbox and each world is procedurally generated leading to an almost unlimited number of different worlds to explore, mine, loot and conquer. The game keeps track of everything and simulates in real time thousands of enemy units with their own abilities to make decisions, responds to the way you play and sense the world around them.

Attack and pillage enemy bases to hinder their resistence

On some worlds, extensive enemy facilities have sprung up and the inhabitants don’t take too kindly to new arrivals attempting to poach resources from their backyard.

Defend against enemy attacks

How long can you survive? Enemy forces attack periodically in an attempt to destroy your bases. If they break through your lines and destroy your primary powercore your attempt to build an outpost will fail!

Mine and scavenge for resources and loot

Mined resources can be used to build structures, traps or fortifications as well as exchanged periodically with passing transports for reinforcements and other goods.

Build and defend vast fortifications

The entire world is made out of blocks that you can create and destroy allowing complete freedom to shape the world as you choose. Want to hunker underground and build a sprawling facility in the catacombs of the world or do you prefer to make large impregnable fortresses to protect your facilities?

Development Status

Isomer is currently in alpha development which means that while it is a full game, stable and playable, many elements are still under active development and improvement. Further alpha updates will iteratively build on and expand features that are already present as well as adding new ones.

Isomer: FAQ

What is Isomer?

It’s an isometric realtime strategy game with sandbox gameplay! Ever played the original XCOM and wanted a larger more responsive world to play in against hordes of enemies? Ever wanted to play a game like Minecraft or Dwarf Fortress but with a focus on realtime strategy and combat? Well Isomer is the game for you!

Why is it called Isomer?

It started off as a initial project name, I had expected to replace it during development. An isomer is a chemical term for a compound that is made up of the same components as others but has different properties. I thought that worked quite well as a name given that everything in Isomer is made from the same basic components (i.e. biomass, minerals, stone, rare minerals etc etc ). Another reason (but to a lesser extent) is the game is isometric in prospective hence the iso part of the name.

How big is the team making Isomer?

It’s one fulltime developer and a part time designer / illustrator, so very small. We’ve also has support from others in playtesting for which we’re extremely grateful for.

Can I donate to help development of Isomer?

Not at the moment, but hold that thought. Anything donated will be used to pay for more development time, more art assets and more sounds. In short, the more copies we sell or wonderfully kind people who donate we are lucky to have to better and larger we can make Isomer.

What games inspired and influenced the development of Isomer?

I suppose any game I’ve played over the last many many years has found its way into Isomer in a little way. Chiefly among them would be the original XCOM – UFO Enemy Unknown and the follow up XCOM Apocalypse. To this day they stand up as fantastic examples of their genres and I’ve played through them many times.

I’ve always wished particularly in XCOM that the environment was more responsive. Whilst the everything could be destroyed by weapons fire or explosives, in each relatively quick tactical action only very small portions of the map would receive damage. I used to try to cut entire structures apart with explosives as much to shape the environment as to experiment with what could be done with such a mechanic. Sadly although the games supported destructible terrain, the tactical combat didn’t really encourage destruction (and construction of defenses was impossible).

More traditional examples of early real time strategy games like the excellent Command and Conquer series served as the inspiration for the way enemy forces organise and attack. In Isomer each enemy unit has decision making ability, if it sees an opportunity to attack it will, if it sees an opportunity to charge at the power core belonging to the player they will.

Can I monetise videos and and/or screenshots on YouTube or elsewhere?

Of course, as far as we’re concerned any videos you capture of you playing or screenshots you take belong to you.
